So why did we choose merino wool as the fabric of choice for our next generation of bike packing base layers?
Merino wool is 30 times more breathable than synthetic polyester because it allows perspiration to occur within the fibres themselves rather than just through gaps in the fabric.
Thermoregulation: Unlike synthetics, merino wool maintains thermal equilibrium during both exertion and rest. It keeps you cool in summer heat and warm in winter chill, even when damp.
Odour Resistance: The fibres are naturally antimicrobial and contain lanolin, which prevents odour-causing bacteria from growing. This allows cyclists to wear the same shirt for multiple days of riding without it smelling, making it ideal for bikepacking and bike touring.
Moisture Management: It can absorb up to 35% of its own weight in moisturewithout feeling wet or clammy against your skin.
Preventing “After-Chill”: Because it continues to insulate even when wet, it prevents the rapid cooling (the “after-chill”) that often occurs when you stop riding after a hard climb.
Unrivaled Comfort: At 17–24 microns, merino fibers are much finer than standard wool (which is usually over 30 microns), meaning they bend when they touch your skin instead of poking it, ensuring it won’t itch.
Eco-Friendly: It is a renewable, biodegradable resource that does not release microplastics into the water during washing.
